Kathryn Markel Fine Arts Gallery in NY is featuring Uncommon Threads: A Survey of Contemporary Quilts. The show closes December 17 but if you can’t make it to the gallery you can view this wonderful show on-line.

Uncommon Threads: A Survey of Contemporary Quilts. The tradition of quilts and quilting has primarily been considered as autilitarian object first and as an artistic medium incidentally. But the rise of feminism and the revaluation of “women’s work” led to a renewed appreciation of the artistic potential of the medium, and to an exploding number of quilters. This exhibition focuses on 11 contemporary artists who use quilting techniques in their work. Some have come out of the traditional world of art quilting, and others are younger artists who have embraced the medium because its deep associations further their artistic practice. Each of these artists emphasizes a different aspect of quilting and has a different agenda. This exhibition shows how an old-fashioned medium is being repurposed for a new generation.

Structures in Cloth Now at the Sangre de Cristo in Pueblo

Structures in Cloth opens tonight at the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center in Pueblo. The opening is from 5-8pm and viewers will be treated to the incredible textile art of SAQA members as well as SANTOS:The Bishop Tafoya Collection, Seasons by Marty Brens, Contrast and Drama: Photography by Allan McConnell and Southern Colorado Watercolor Society Signature Members.

Up, Up and Away by Carol Ann Waugh is gracing the walls at the new Eastside Human Services Building in Denver. It is hanging on the second floor, behind the reception desk for Family Services. “Fond Memories”, a fiber piece by Susan Strickland is now on exhibit in the “Fabric of Legacies 29th Annual Art Quilt Exhibition” at Lincoln Center, Ft. Collins.

Fond Memories

Inspiration: letters saved by my Mother which were written to me during WWII, welcoming me into the world. My Dad was stationed overseas and I did not see him until I was three years old. I wanted to commemorate and remember the love and loneliness that these men were feeling.
