This statewide juried process garnered 1,635 entries from 588 entrants representing all media.
Dean Soebel, Clyfford Still Museum Director, and Collin Parson, Arvada Center Exhibition Manager and Curator, chose 191 works by 160 artists that represent the quality, depth and diversity of art being created in the state by emerging and established artists.
“Regina V. Benson’s “Urban Morning” was juried into this company of works. “Urban Morning” reflects on Regina Benson’s physical and emotional experience of being in city centers – surrounded by towering glass and steel buildings, both absorbing and reflecting the days light and nearby landscapes. These particular towers, too, evoke the burned skeletons of the Twin Towers and adjacent buildings, standing like ancient ruins – each sunrise bringing renewed awareness of that one morning.
In much of her work, Regina marries image and process. She creates her art directly on elements of the landscape – on grass, bumpy roads, beds of rocks – during a broad range of weather conditions: snow, rain and wind. Additionally in this particular work, she used iron oxide harvested from rusted metals, along with the rusted objects themselves, to give singular and original marks on cloth. The convex shaping gives her work greater dimensional and emotional resonance.
Come hear Regina speak about her inspirations, processes and challenges
