May 2017 News – Report on Lincoln 2017 and more…

SAQA Conference in Lincoln, NE

I just attended my first SAQA Conference at Lincoln and I was blown away.  Being in the company of all the wonderful artists that were there was so exciting and energizing.  I came back inspired to work in my studio and get to work for you.  Here are some of the highlights.

First, I spent two days with other regional reps learning the ins and outs of this job.  Hopefully, the activity you see from me from now on will reflect what I learned.  I got to know the Rep from Montana/Idaho (Carol Kimble) so look for some joint gatherings.  Two other regions want us to join them in a multi-regional show (details will be forthcoming when we have the approvals and plans in place.

We also talked about Regional Meetings.  I will be working with our regional members to set up local groups that SAQA is calling Local Connections.  You will hear more details soon.  I will send out announcements for each one in separate emails.  I am really looking forward to meeting more of you.

The conference itself was great.  We spend a whole day at the International Quilt Study Center and Museum.  The SAQA exhibit Layered Voices was on display as well as an installation exhibit of 50 log cabin quilts designed by artist Luke Haynes.  The most exciting part was the visit to the quilt preservation and storage area.

The rest of the program included several very informative Lightening Talks including those by Christi Beckman, Regina Benson, Denice Labadie from Colorado, and Joan Sowada from Wyoming (25% of all Lightening talks from our region!!), two panel presentations and a talk by Michael James showing how his work has changed over the four decades he has been quilting.

I also learned how to play Bananagrams and other quite useful skills that will remain unnamed.

Next year, the conference (TEXtiles 2018) will be held April 5-8, 2018 in San Antonio, TX..  If you can, I really urge you to go.  It is was fun, inspirational experience.  The following two conferences will be in San Jose, CA and Toronto, Ontario. Check the SAQA website for dates.

Regional Meeting in Gillette, WY

Mary Louise and her DH, Jim, are taking a trip that will lead them through Gillette, WY in June.  DH has generously given her a half day from their vacation to meet with SAQA members in the area.  (If anyone has hints for a hike, or some activity for him while we meet, I would appreciate it!)

So, Mary Louise will be at the AVA Community Art Center, located 509 W. 2nd St., Gillette, WY 82716, Sunday, June 11, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.  We will have light refreshments and there will be a door prize for a lucky member in attendance. Please come and join us in talking about SAQA, what we want SAQA to be for us and just getting to know each other.  All regional members are welcome.  We are also inviting SAQA members from Montana to join us. It is all in the geography…

See you in Wyoming.
